Our Story

How did we get here?
Here are the Cliffs Notes:

Kenny Lynch and Dave Sharp were seasoned pastors at Covenant Fellowship Church in Glen Mills, PA, a church committed to church planting. After much prayer, exploration, and discussion, Covenant sent Kenny and Dave in 2009 to plant a church in Downingtown.

Church plant is a relative term; church plop might be more accurate. The church began with about 100 people, two full-time pastors, a leadership team, and several small groups with experienced leaders. Still, we had an all-hands-on-deck mentality, setting up and tearing down church each week at our rental location. Men, women, and children regularly did outreach to the community. Ask about the Easter egg hunt at Kerr Park sometime. It was awesome (and a bit terrifying)!

Shortly after the church started, our Sunday home became the Downingtown Regal Movie Theater. We were there for about three years. If we think hard enough, we can still smell the popcorn. We remember telling the kids in children’s ministry to steer clear of the used gum stuck to the bottom of the movie seats. Fun times. We sought to preach the gospel, and the church grew.

Fast forward to 2014. A small church was parting ways with what we needed: a permanent meeting space. God was in the details for everyone involved, and we began to call 40 West Pennsylvania Avenue “home.”

Some significant quick hits as we scan the years:

  • BGC’s pastoral staff expanded when Jason Russell joined Kenny and Dave in 2012.

  • We developed BGC’s Constitution, which outlines our Statement of Faith and central policies.

  • We researched several church planting groups and eventually joined Harbor Network (formerly known as Sojourn Network). Harbor is a collective designed to plant gospel-preaching churches and to care for pastors and leaders aiming to thrive in the gospel.

  • We affirmed more elders and deacons, some of whom remain in leadership today.

  • We’ve partnered with organizations such as Frontiers and sent missionaries to strategic locations worldwide.

  • We’ve baptized many new believers and sought to preach God’s word Sunday after Sunday.

  • We have seen growth in our organizational structure and attendance. More people than ever are involved in discipleship, and it’s a joy to see the Holy Spirit at work in countless ways!
